On July 20th, 1987, Walter Röhrl climbed Pikes Peak in an Audi Sport quattro S1. The time to beat? 11:09,22. Röhrl did it in 10:47,85. Since Röhrl's legendary hill climb, many have tried to best his time, but few have been able to. And those that have been, were only able to do so thanks to the better traction that the course's new coat of pavement gave their vehicles. In other words, Röhrl's legacy is still respected to this day.
Walter Röhrl is a legend in the world of racing, and Audi knows it. In fact, it's why the luxury automaker is teaming up with him again to conquer Pikes Peak, this summer. Röhrl won't be racing in the actual 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, though. His professional racing career came to a close in 1992. Rather, this race will be purely just for fun and to commemorate his amazing achievement.
What's more, since Röhrl won't be competing, there's no need for a modern speed machine in his ascent. Rather, Audi will be further honoring his achievement by supplying him with the same Sport quattro S1 that he drove the first time. To some, the boxy rally car make look a bit dated, but it's hard to argue with the results that the nearly 600 horsepower model got the first time.
You can bet that everyone at Braman Audi will be watching closely as Röhrl relives history. Of course, we won't be too busy to arrange a test drive on any new Audi that you may be interested in. So make sure pay us a visit us at 2815 Okeechobee Boulevard today.
