Braman Audi has been psyched about the prospect of the R8 e-tron concept since stealth spies with cameras first captured pics of it running circles around the famous Nurburgring track. That was early this spring. Just a little later, in June, the Audi R8 e-tron gained notoriety as the fastest EV to set tires on the Nurburgring track.

Friend of the adrenaline fiend and those with a green-colored conscious, the Audi R8 e-tron sounded almost too good to be true. And it's hard not to shed a tear when we write that might just be the case.

While we're lucky to bring you happy news often. Today, we are here to tell you that the German automaker has officially pressed pause on the R8 e-tron. The decision is based on two very important conclusions. First, the battery needed to create such a zero-emissions speed fiend costs a small fortune. Second, demand for such a novel EV is not expected to be worth either the efforts or the investments needed to transform it from concept to production car.

Some small dose of comfort for those whose hearts just fell to the floor is the fact that the Audi F12 E Performance Prototype is still in the picture. And that, for our friends who previously have not heard of the model, is equipped with R8 e-tron underpinnings. So, while the Audi e-tron might not prosper in in body, we can hope it will in spirit.
