Audi is no stranger to seeking outside talent when it comes to creating
new designs for their vehicles. In 1980, they hired Peter Schreyer, a Bavarian
designer who specialized in transportation design. In fact, he won the Audi
scholarship and studied at the Royal College of Art in
His designs can be seen in a number of vehicles, most notably the Audi TT. It was sleek and had an almost seamless look that so intrigued people that, despite the fact that the Audi TT was released in 1998, Car Design News called it one of the "most influential automotive design in recent time" - in 2006. But the Audi TT was not the only car design he created. He is also the chief designer in the Audi A3, A4, and A6.
Peter Schreyer doesn't limit himself to just vehicles - he is also an artist, and it is this talent that gives him eyes for concepts and ideas that other carmakers don't have. With creativity and know-how on his side, he has crafted Audi cars that people fell in love with. So much so that people easily remember his name as a major force in the car design industry. To him, design is very similar to art in that it is "also creative and artistic." But he also knows that for design, one has to look at the big picture. There is a broader audience that one has to please in order for a concept to truly work. And for many years, this is precisely what he did with Audi vehicles.
He has since moved on to other locations and other projects, including his own art shows, but the designs he started with Audi most certainly linger on. Future designers are inspired by what he brought to the company and aren't afraid to mesh it with their own in order to create something new and equally appealing to all those looking for Audi style.
