Not only does checking your transmission fluid ensure that your transmission works properly, it's also quite easy. The Audi West Palm Beach team has prepared the below information detailing the step-by-step process that our fellow drivers in West Palm Beach, Delray Beach, and Boynton Beach will need to follow in order to successfully perform this vital piece of automotive maintenance. Read on to get started.

The Right Supplies for the Job

This relatively simple procedure requires the following items:

  • A clean rag
  • A funnel
  • Fresh transmission fluid (be sure to consult your owner's manual for the exact type of fluid to use with your transmission)

Step 1: Warm Up the Engine

After collecting your supplies, the next thing to do is to start your car. Transmission fluid expands when it gets warm. Because of this fact, you'll want to get conditions to be as close to the way they are when you're driving the car as possible. That way, you'll be able to pour in the right amount. If you checked the fluid when it was cold, it would look lower and you could easily overfill it.

Step 2: Check the Transmission Fluid

Once the car is warmed up and you've opened the hood, find the transmission dipstick. It will be close to the oil dipstick. When you've found it, remove it and wipe it off with the clean rag. Open up the rag and take a look at the fluid. Here are the things you'll want to check out:

  • Consistency. What you're concerned about here is dirt. If your transmission fluid is dirty, it will need to be changed. Also, make sure there are no bubbles. This indicates that there is too much fluid or it's the wrong kind. Either way, if you're seeing bubbles, have it inspected by a professional as soon as possible.
  • Color. If the fluid is healthy, the color will range from a clear red to a light brown hue. If it looks dark brown, have it changed. Black transmission fluid could be an indication that there is an issue going on with your transmission.
  • Smell. Healthy fluid doesn't really give off much of a smell. If it smells burnt, have a mechanic look at your transmission right away.

Once everything checks out, you can put the dipstick back.

Step 3: Fluid Level and Adding More

Go ahead and pull the dipstick out again. Make sure it's between the two lines. If it's below the bottom line, you'll need to refill it. To do this, put the funnel up to the opening and start pouring it in slowly. When you're sure you've filled enough, replace the dipstick and take it back out to make sure it's between the lines.
